Teenager Hang Self Because She Could Not Tell Her Parents She Might Be A Lesbian

Pity!!! I saw this story on lailablog....
According to Pink News, The body of 14-year-old Elisabeth Lowe, known as Lizzie, from Manchester, Didsbury, was found in the Millgate Fields area of Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury at around 11.15pm on 10 September.

An inquest heard she had sent a friend a text at around 8.30pm which concluded by saying “…stay strong. I am sorry.” Despite extended resuscitation attempts by paramedics, Lizzie was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

The Manchester Evening News reports a post-mortem examination concluded she died from the effects of hanging and that she had no drugs or alcohol in her body at the time of her death. She also had no diagnosable mental health problems.

Speaking about Lizzie’s fears of telling her parents about her sexuality, a friend told the inquest: “She said she wasn’t sure if they (parents) would be ok with it. I told her that I didn’t think it would be like that but she did not want to tell them.”

The inquest heard that Lizzie, described as a top performer at school and musician in a Christian orchestra, had confided to friends about self-harming and having suicidal thoughts.

One friend told the hearing that Lizzie was “finding it hard to connect with God as she thought she was lying to him”.

Recording a verdict that Lizzie killed herself, senior coroner Nigel Meadows said: “She was clearly an intelligent young woman. “She was a successful student but was going through issues of developing maturity and exploring her sexuality and was struggling to come to terms with that against her faith beliefs.

“It is clear she was struggling and she was talking to others about it. “She never had the opportunity to share her concerns with her parents. “But I have absolutely no doubt they would have been supportive in their reaction.”

In a statement after the verdict, Lizzie’s mother and father, Kevin and Hillary, said: “Lizzie was a wonderful exuberant and loved member of her church, school and community. “She was a gifted student, sportswoman and musician who was outgoing, fun-loving and enjoyed the love and respect of many friends. “We are utterly devastated at losing her. “Lizzie did not make known her struggle with depression and the challenges she tried to face alone as a young adult. “We wish she had confided because she would have found a wealth of love and acceptance and support. “The loss our precious daughter has left us broken-hearted".

Strange Things Your body Do in a cold Harmattan

With the Harmattan comes a cold dusty air! But have you ever stopped to think of the effect of cold on the human body systems?

The responses manifested by the body has always been to balance the disequilibrium caused by these external stimulants.
A cold air would cause different but similar responses in both male and females;

1) GOOSE PIMPLES; this is usually classical and most times show that one is cold. Goose pimples has to do with the pilomotor reflexes of the involuntary muscles just underneath the skin surface as controlled by the autonomic nervous system

2)NIPPLES ENLARGE; also a similar mechanism occur as in goose pimples. It has nothing to do with erectile tissue but contraction of cylindrically arranged smooth muscle cells under the control of the autonomic nervous system.

3) SCROTUM SHRINKAGE; still remember the 1st time I had the feeling, I was scared and surprised at the same time. Thought I was actually sick. Only to discover some years later that its only the body's way of preserving the function of the testis.

4)TESTICLE DISAPPEARANCE; this is also know as retractile testicle. It is a response seen in men for the preservation of the sperm cells and for continuity of the human race.

Meningitis; Inflammed meninges

The Meningitic Belt
Meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges covering the brain and spinal cord.
Meningitis is predominant in the Meningitic belt, and is particularly lethal in infants and the immunosuppressed, where a high index of suspicion is required for a diagnosis to be made.

The casuative organisms are bacteria and viruses. Commonly, the Neisseria meningitidis, is the leading cause. Other organisms are,
Streptococcus pneumonia
Escherichia coli
Haemophilius influenza etc.

I was going through my mails and discovered a story is trending in the USA. It is about the failure of physicians to have missed the deadly signs of meningitis in a toddler (read full story here).

What I believe went wrong are;
1) To diagnose meningitis a high level of suspicion is needed, even in the so called "Meningitic belt"
2) It's possible that the physician may not really know the warning signs of meningitis. This is something every medical student down here, is supposed to know. Like I said, meningitis as a condition may not be a common occurrence in that area.
3)Medicine as a science, doctors are trained to assume that local endemic conditions are more likely in patient's, hence, we put aside other "less local" conditions until another day.
 This may just have been the situation on ground.
 Meningitis is a killer and it truly requires a very very high index of suspicion. Be alert!!!

Weird Medical News in 2014...

I saw this stuff on medicaldaily.com, and I thought I should share. Read full story about 2014 weird medical news.
      I believe the first story was so cool; it was about how an electrician was electrocuted with about 14000 watts of energy. Now, he has this star pattern imprint on his eye. This event was published in New England Journal of medicine. The star shaped pattern is actually a star shaped cataract that was formed after the 42 year old electrician.

Doctor find baby teeth in a brain tumour of a patient. The teeth, most likely a teratoma, was extracted at surgery at the University of Maryland medical centre in the patient diagnosed of craniopharyngioma, a common benign tumour seen in children.

Man drinks young people urine to stay forever young. The man's satisfaction is not sexually based, but built on a false and strange fantasy that drinking children's urine, somehow makes him look younger.

Ugandan Child Abuser: Sentenced to 4 years in Jail

Some still believe that the Ugandan maid caught on tape beating a toddler in her care should be killed. The maid, Jolly Tumuhirwe, a 22year old lady was secretly filmed late November, by 18-month old, Arnella Kamanzi, in their home near Kampala. However, the verdict of 4 years in prison have been handed down to Jolly.
The footage showed the maid bashing the wailing toddler, stepping on her and smacking her face. The video went viral on social media, with hundreds of thousands seeing it and shocked by such level of abuse.

The maid last week, pleaded guilty to abusing and maltreating the toddler as she was motivated by beatings given to her by small Arnella's mother- an allegation that the mother, Angella Kamanzi, denied.

The family have long accepted the verdict and hope other maids perpetuating thesame acts, turn a new leaf. "This verdict should serve as a message to other maids out there, that they should not mistreat children", Eric Kamanzi, Arnella Father said.

Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)

Kangaroo Mother Care is a concept in Paediatrics, where emphasis is placed on skin to skin contact between mother and her child. This care is mostly recommended for preterm infants or low bith weight infants. Kangaroo Mother care has 3 parts;

1) Skin to Skin Contact; this is to ensure that the neonate maintain an optimal body temperature.
2) Exclusive Breast feeding; the infant is to suckle directly from the breast for at least six months for a term infant or by expressing breast milk into a cup and feeding infant with a spoon.
3) Support to the dyad; which means whatever is that is needed for the medical, emotional, psychological and physical well being of the mother and baby must be provide to them without separating them.
This is a therapeutic method of care for the neonate and essentially enhance bonding between mother and child.

Now the Harmattan is here!!!

Be aware that in this Harmattan season, there is an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infections, especially among under 5 children.
Take more fluid, keep your skin oily to avoid breakage of skin surface and hence skin infection.
You can still look healthy and good this season if you use oil based lotions, lips gloss, and wear heat conserving clothes.
This period comes with increased dust particles in the air, hence, increase your bathing time and please do move about with a clean white handkerchief.

Do enjoy the season!!!
