SAD: Pharmacy Student Dies on Graduation Eve.

I saw this sad story on Medical World Nigeria... I believe there is wisdom to be learnt at the end of it.
Pharmacy student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Kenneth Akibigho Asemu, has died, 24 days to his graduation, throwing his family and friends into mourning. EZEKIEL EFEOBHOKHAN (400-Level Pharmacy) reports.
He had just completed his final year at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and was looking forward to his graduation. But when the induction held last Wednesday, Kenneth Akibigho was not among the graduands.
He died 24 days before the induction.
His family was planning big for his induction along with 112 other graduands before his death. The late Kenneth was  injured in a gas explosion at his Famous Villa residence in Ekosodin, an off-campus location. He died in hospital.
The late Kenneth’s neighbour, Vincent Aifuwa, recounted how the “sad incident” happened. According to him, they exchanged greetings when he (the late Kenneth) returned from school on the fateful day. Then, they retired to their apartments.
“Suddenly, I heard an explosion,” Vincent said, adding: “Shouts of help came from the direction of Kenneth’s apartment.”
He said he rushed to the late Kenneth’s room, and met him on the floor, screaming for help.
Vincent added: “Kenneth wanted to prepare noodles when the gas cooker suddenly discharged gas, which caused the explosion. I called other neighbours for help and we rushed him to the nearby Fuller Health Hospital. But, doctors there referred him to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) as they could not handle the case.”
The next day, Vincent said he visited Kenneth and saw that he was responding to treatment. “He even read the drug prescription written for him. Afterwards, he gave me his ATM card to withdraw N5,000 to buy the drugs,” Vincent said.
He added: “I called him on Friday and he told me that they would discharge him the following Tuesday. I was shocked when a friend told me on Saturday that he was dead. I never believed it. I ran to UBTH but I was disappointed. I don’t understand why he died, despite his response to treatment.”
Vincent said he always called the late Kenneth “the general” for his bravery and smartness. “He had treated my son freely and also saved my younger brother from the adverse effect of a drug he used,” he said.
According to autopsy, Kenneth died of blood clots in his lungs, which doctors said caused breathing distress. A nurse, told CAMPUSLIFE that the late Kenneth gasped for breath and was given oxygen but he could not breathe properly. He died on Saturday morning.
Anthony Ehimare, a 400-Level Pharmacy student, said the late Kenneth was friendly, describing his death as painful.
His words: “Kenneth was a mentor and someone loved in the campus fellowship for his friendliness. He could handle and teach any topic assigned to him. He had a good knowledge of the Bible and was a great preacher of the Word God. He had this characteristic laugh whenever he talked, after which he would always say ‘you won’t understand’.”
His classmates took to the social media to express their feelings about Kenneth’s death. Odera Unachukwu wrote: “Sun set at noon but we cannot question God’s will and judgment.”
Peter Onochie said: “Ken, I am yet to come out of the shock of your death. You should have lived and got your certificate for which you laboured for six years.
‘’Rest in peace my colleague. May God bless your soul.”
Ovie Carana posted: “My dear brother, as your body will be laid to rest, you will live on in my heart forever. May your soul rest in perfect peace.”
Penultimate Monday, his family compound in Ughelli South Local Government of Delta State was enveloped in grief when his body was brought home for burial. Many family members were incosolable.
Speaking at the funeral, the Deputy Dean, Dr Tony Waka, said Kenneth would be missed for his simplicity. He prayed God to grant him rest.
The late Kenneth was born 30 years ago. He obtained the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) advanced level certificate in Pure Sciences from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, Kaduna State in 2007.
He was admitted into the UNIBEN to study Human Anatomy but later got transferred to the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Shocker!!! How President Jonathan Lost The Election - UK Guardian

UK Guardian's Max Siollun writes on the five major reasons President Jonathan lost the 2015 presidential elections. It's an interesting read. Find below...
Goodluck Jonathan has earned the dubious distinction of being the first president in Nigerian history to lose an election. In many ways, Jonathan was the architect of his own downfall. He made critical mistakes that turned the public and allies against him, and led them to gravitate towards the opposition. Here’s where it all went wrong: Continue...

1. Don’t cross the boss

When Nigeria emerged from 15 years of military rule in 1999, Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic party (PDP) was formed by wealthy retired generals to inherit power from the military. One of the godfathers was General Olusegun Obasanjo, who has governed Nigeria twice (between 1976-1979 and 1999-2007). Jonathan made the mistake of alienating Obasanjo; leading the general to write a public 18-page letter containing lacerating criticism of the president in December 2013. A party member likened Obasanjo’s hectoring of Jonathan to a father’s disappointment with his son.

Rather than make peace with the 77-year-old, Jonathan’s office retaliated.
Getting on the wrong side of Obasanjo is the political equivalent of crossing a mafia don. You will pay. Obasanjo’s attacks on Jonathan intensified. In February, an irate Obasanjo quit the PDP and dramatically ripped up his party membership card on television.
Jonathan was naïve to think he could remain president without the support of PDP godfathers like Obasanjo. Although Nigeria is no longer under military rule, many retired millionaire generals call the shots from behind the scenes.

2. Playing fair

Previous Nigerian presidents were too cynical to expose themselves to the unpredictable risk of a fair election. The election victories of PDP presidents during the past 16 years have been partially “assisted” by electoral malpractice. That changed when Jonathan nominated Professor Attahiru Jega as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) in 2010. Jega vowed to reform Nigeria’s electoral process to ensure free and fair elections.

The former university lecturer exuded calm authority and integrity. He has painstakingly prepared for the task over the past four years by studying the rigging methods used in previous elections, implementing an elaborate system of voter registration, training thousands of electoral staff, and introducing biometric readers to identify voters by reading their thumbprint.
Jonathan created the environment for the emergence of these changes and gave Jega the freedom and authority to conduct reforms that led to a credible election. But by giving Jega a free hand to play fair, he allowed Jega to craft the weapons that were used to oust him from power.

3. Boko Haram and the Chibok kidnaps

When Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok in northern Nigeria, Jonathan failed to realise how much this would capture the public’s attention, both locally and internationally. His failure to speak about the kidnap for several weeks made him appear uncaring. These shortcomings were exacerbated by the behaviour of his wife, Patience, when she met the mothers of the kidnapped girls. Her ostentatious display and over-the-top emotions were mercilessly parodied
.
Jonathan’s perceived casual indifference to the suffering of his people was compounded when he was photographed celebrating his niece’s lavish wedding just a few days after Boko Haram had killed 2,000 people in the town of Baga.

4. Bad management

Jonathan’s relations with party members at times resembled a football coach antagonising his star players into leaving for rival teams. His tendency to fall out with colleagues simultaneously weakened his party and strengthened the opposition. He quarrelled with one after another; leading several of them to leave the party in frustration and join the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). The alliance between these and the opposition shoved Jonathan out of power.

5. Corruption and cronyism

Nigerians refer to their country’s resources as the “national cake” which must be shared by its citizens. There was a perception that Jonathan gave slices of the cake largely to members of his own community. Many powerful members of his government were from Jonathan’s region in the deep south of the country. Even Jonathan’s wife was appointed as a senior civil servant in his home state of Bayelsa.

Under Jonathan’s presidency many militant leaders from the oil producing Niger Delta area in the south have become very rich from government patronage and contracts. Some of them have been awarded security contracts to guard the oil installations they once protested against and attacked.
Jonathan has also pardoned a former ally accused of fraud and money laundering, increasing the cloud of suspicion hanging over his government.

These events caused deep resentment in other parts of Nigeria and created the impression that Jonathan ran a government that benefits those from his part of the country, the south, but not many others.

Jonathan even managed to get into a public feud with the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the respected Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. In February 2014 Sanusi alleged that $20bn of Nigerian oil revenue was unaccounted for. Rather than investigating the claims Jonathan fired Sanusi for his impertinence at publicly hinting of government fraud.

Buhari’s victory is historic and unprecedented. However Jonathan was responsible almost as much as Buhari was.

Nigerians are still basking in the ecstacy of the victory by General Muhammadu Buhari. But what happens when Telegraph as an important question, read the tweets of Nigerians. Read after the cut;

What is your own impression? Do you think our President-Elect would succeed where President Goodluck Jonathan has failed?

Read General Buhari's Epic Acceptance Speech After Winning Election.

At exactly 5:15 yesterday (Tuesday) evening, President Jonathan called to congratulate me on my victory.

For this, I want all Nigerians to join me in congratulating and appreciating Mr President for his statesmanship.President Jonathan was a worthy opponent. I extend my hand of fellowship to him.
I look forward to meeting him soon, as we plan the transition from one administration to another. He will receive nothing but cooperation and understanding from me, who led this nation to democracy.

Even when the vote was extended to Sunday in some places, you still performed your civic duties. You did so peacefully. You voted with your heart. Your vote affirms that you believe Nigeria’s future can be better than what it is today.

You voted for change and now change has come.

In a more profound way, it is you, Nigerians that have won,” The people have shown their love for our nation and their belive in democracy. The declaration of INEC accurately reflects the will of the people. While there might have been some logistical obstacles and irregularities associated with the exercise, the result shall stand as what the people want.

Air Pollution May Cause Anxiety in Residents of Major Cities Like Lagos.

In a conference I attended in the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, one of the speakers suggested that residents of air polluted areas, like Lagos state, may suffer more anxiety related disorders. I thought it was absurd, but I have been looking up reasons why this is so.

Ladies Eyeliners Could Contaminate Your Eye...

(Reuters Health) – - Eyeliner applied on the inside of the lash line is very likely to move into the eye itself and cause symptoms, according to a small study that captured migrating makeup on video.
Eye doctors often see patients coming into clinics with eyeliner residue stuck to contact lenses or trapped in the coating over their eyes called the tear film, said Alison Ng, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo in Canada who led the study.
Ng advised that makeup wearers can reduce the risk of complications by keeping products away from the inner lid margin.
