Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have suspended
their over a month old strike action. The lecturers proceeded on a
strike on August 14th.
Announcing the suspension, the President of the
union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the strike would be suspended
until the end of October so that the Federal government can fulfill all
the promises it had made to the association. He said failure to fulfill
the agreement would result in the resumption of the strike.
ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike on August 14th following government’s failure to implement its 2009 agreement and 2013 memorandum of understanding (MoU), non-payment of salaries, non-payment of earned academic allowance (EAA), removal of universities staff schools from funding by government and non-implementation of provisions of the 2014 pension reform act with respect to retired professors and their salaries.
